The Just Skin experience
We understand that being diagnosed with skin cancer and requiring treatment can be daunting. That’s why we have put a lot of thought into creating the Just Skin experience; something different to other medical experiences.
Treating skin with superficial therapy is a deliberate and well thought out process. We want the best outcome for you so we take the time to ensure your experience and the results achieved are the best they possibly could be. Each step is important but we also want to make you feel special during your time with us.
Your experience across each clinic may vary slightly, simply due to the set up of these individual facilities. Each step is important however, and regardless, we will make sure you are our priority throughout your time with us.
When you walk through the door, a member of our friendly team will greet you. While you sip on a freshly made tea or coffee in our lounge, we’ll prepare for your first consultation with the Radiation Oncologist . Colin Dicks. During this time, we will assist you with any required administration and/or documentation.
We prefer if you have a referral from your GP, as this will help with Medicare contributions towards the overall cost of treatment.
During the first consultation, you will meet Colin Dicks, our Radiation Oncologist. At this time, Colin will review your medical history, examine your skin and determine the best treatment option for you. This may not always be our therapy and if so, we will be sure to let you know.
This initial consultation is your opportunity to have all your questions answered and to feel confident about your treatment choice. It is important that you feel relaxed and comfortable so we will do everything we can to ensure this.
If superficial therapy is the right option for you, Colin will complete a treatment prescription, followed by mapping out the treatment plan.
Planning the treatment
This may occur directly after the consultation.
Colin and the Radiation Therapist will record the area of skin that needs to be treated. This is usually marked on the skin and, using accurate skin landmarks, the region is recorded or photographed.
Special shielding may be introduced when required to protect the skin that doesn’t require treatment. This is quite common when treatment is taking place near the eye or the face.
Once the skin areas have been marked and documented we will offer you a schedule of treatment appointments. At the same time, we are happy to go over any outstanding questions or discuss any concerns.
To ensure we gather the most accurate treatment details, including the required length and depth, we will calculate the exact requirements. Please bear with us as this may take a few days so we can make sure everything is perfect before you start.
Administering the treatment is a completely painless procedure. The Radiation Therapist will ensure you are in a comfortable position, position any required protective shielding and position the treatment machine to accurately deliver the therapy.
Once the team are satisfied that the setup is correct, they will leave the room and remotely administer the X-ray. The entire treatment takes less than a minute (per lesion) and is perfectly safe.
Once your first treatment is complete, you are free to go home with no anticipate side effects.
Your skin will be reviewed by the therapist at every treatment and if there are any concerns, the doctor will take a look. As the treatment progresses, creams will be prescribed to help minimise any side effects you may experience, which may include wound formation, weeping of the wound and scabbing.
Once the treatment is complete, the effects of the treatment will continue for a few weeks but they are very predictable. Once this acute phase of treatment is over, the skin will heal revealing, what we are sure will be, beautiful results.
Once the final treatment is complete, it’s time to celebrate but please know, it will take a few weeks for your skin to fully heal.
To ensure things are progressing as well as expected, we will arrange a series of follow up consultation with Colin. The timing and number of appointments will be determined on a case by case basis.Follow us
